The Insult Gift
A wealthy merchant came to the Buddha, furious. He shouted insults - you arrogant, lazy, fraud, beggar. The Buddha sat unmoved, a gentle smile on his lips.
When the merchant paused, breathless, the Buddha asked, “If you offer a gift to someone and they do not accept it, to whom does the gift belong?”
The merchant sniffed. “Obviously, it remains with me.”
“Ah,” said the Buddha. “Then you have just offered me insults, and I have not accepted them. Tell me - who owns your anger now?”
The merchant stood frozen. He had carried the gift all morning and never once set it down.
Lesson: Refusal is a liberating art. What you do not accept cannot burden you.

What we do not accept from others can never be ours: their anger, their hatred, their jealousy, their envy...
